President Donald Trump has granted pardons to 23 pro-life activists who have been imprisoned by the Department of Justice of the previous administration.

The pardons, granted a day before the 52nd annual March for Life in Washington D.C. on Jan. 24, include 23 pro-life activists. These defendants were imprisoned for protesting at abortion facilities in Tennessee, Washington, D.C. and New York. The protests included singing songs, praying and locking arms in front of abortion clinics in an attempt to block staff from entering the facilities.

The pardoned activists were prosecuted by the Justice Department of the previous administration under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act, which was passed in 1994 by a Democrat-controlled Congress and signed into law by former President Bill Clinton. The act prohibits the use of force, threats of force or physical obstruction against anyone seeking or providing reproductive health services. “Twenty-three people were prosecuted,” Trump said during the live signing ceremony on Newsmax and the Newsmax2 online streaming platform. “They should not have been prosecuted. Many of them are elderly people. They should not have been prosecuted. This is a great honor to sign this.”

GOP lawmakers push to repeal FACE Act

The same day that Trump pardoned 23 pro-life activists, Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) announced plans to reintroduce a bill to repeal the FACE Act, a law that has been used against pro-life advocates.

“[Former President] Joe Biden’s unjust weaponization of the FACE Act against pro-life activists and people of faith belongs in the dustbin of history,” Lee said. “While President [Donald] Trump is stopping these outrageous prosecutions, we should ensure that no future administration has the ability to persecute Americans through unequal application of the law.”

Meanwhile, Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) introduced the House companion bill on Jan. 21.

“Americans just spent the last four years being targeted by a weaponized justice system,” Roy said. “The FACE Act was one of the primary weapons of abuse—being used to politically target, arrest, and jail pro-life Americans for speaking out and standing up for life.”

He then stated that the Republicans should take advantage of their majority control in both Congress and the White House to prevent future misuse of the law.

“While President Trump and his team are already fast at work reversing the damage of the J6 political prosecutions and persecutions through pardons and commutations, I am hopeful those targeted under the FACE Act will be given similar relief,” Roy said. “But importantly, we in Congress need to do our part to eliminate the laws used for the weaponization, including the FACE Act.”
