Pro-life organizations in Florida are focusing on defeating a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would legalize unrestricted abortion in the Sunshine State.
On June 24, the pro-life group Florida Voice for the Unborn held its second annual Dobbs Day Banquet and Workshop celebrating the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision of the Supreme Court that allowed states to decide on whether to criminalize abortion. This year, the banquet and workshop were focused on organizing pro-life volunteers all over the state to beat the ballot measure.
On the ballot this November is Florida Amendment 4, entitled “Amendment to Limit Government Interference in Abortion.” On its face, the amendment establishes a constitutional right to abortion before fetal viability – generally between 23 and 24 weeks gestational age. But, through its many loopholes, the amendment would basically permit unrestricted abortion in Florida through all nine months, removing parental consent and all existing abortion laws and regulations, along with the requirement that only a physician can perform an abortion. The ballot measure requires a supermajority of 60 percent voter approval to pass.
Welcoming the pro-life volunteers who traveled from across the state to join the event was Andrew Shirvell, founder and executive director of Florida Voice for the Unborn.
“Enshrining abortion in the Florida constitution is wrong. We must protect every human life,” said Andrew Shirvell, Florida Voice for the Unborn founder and executive director. “If God can overturn Roe v. Wade when no one thought it would be possible, He can stop this pro-abortion ballot initiative in the free state of Florida.”
To boost its influence and utilize limited resources most effectively, the group’s concentration is on educating possible Republican voters through the work of very dedicated grassroots volunteers.
Through data-targeting, its “Precinct-Level Vote NO on #4 Campaign” focuses on those registered Republican voters who have a history of voting twice in general elections since 2016 and comes to them at the precinct level through door-to-door, mailing and phone outreach.
“The end game is reaching those people who are going to vote in November,” Shirvell said.
Meanwhile, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is warning that abortion advocates in the state are preparing to run a radical ballot rule across the finish line in November.
“Because all of the Southeast has various forms of pro-life legislation, Florida would become the abortion mecca of this region – and maybe one of the abortion meccas of the entire world, because it would be one of the most liberal abortion regimes anywhere in the world,” the Republican governor stated during a Zoom call on June 27, with hundreds of pastors and faith leaders.
“This amendment is written maybe more liberal than New York and California, but you would basically have a cottage industry, where people would be coming into Florida for this purpose. And look, we’re a tourism state, but we want to be family-friendly tourism, not abortion tourism.”
DeSantis encouraged faith leaders to help their congregations understand the crucial importance of fighting Amendment 4, “The Right to Abortion Initiative.” Floridians will be able to vote on the measure on Election Day, November 5.
Amendment 4 would set up a “constitutional right to abortion before fetal viability,” which means before the baby can survive outside the womb.
