The radical leftists of New York are now making their disregard for human life the law of the land. Democrat legislators are passing the so-called Reproductive Health Act, which will legalize the murdering of unborn infants all the way up until birth — and will also be removing abortion from the state’s criminal code in entirety.
New York’s previous laws prohibited abortion after 24 weeks gestation — which is largely considered to be the “age of viability” for most premature infants. What this means is that babies born at 24 weeks (and beyond) have a reasonably good chance at life outside the womb. Now, that chance is in danger of being ripped away. Now, Democrats are advocating for the killing of fetuses capable of surviving outside their mothers’ wombs.
The Reproductive Health Act declares that “every individual who becomes pregnant has the fundamental right to choose to carry the pregnancy to term, to give birth to a child, or to have an abortion.”
Under the legislation, health care providers who are “acting in good faith” can kill the baby all the way up until the moments before it’s born, provided the murder is done to “to protect the patient’s life or health.” When a woman is pregnant, health care providers are tasked with protecting two lives, but it seems Democrats have forgotten that unborn children are patients (and victims) of the health care system, too.
As the legislation reportedly states:
A health care practitioner licensed, certified, or authorized under title eight of the education law, acting within his or her lawful scope of practice, may perform an abortion when, according to the practitioner’s reasonable and good faith professional judgment based on the facts of the patient’s case: the patient is within twenty-four weeks from the commencement of pregnancy, or there is an absence of fetal viability, or the abortion is necessary to protect the patient’s life or health.
Pro-abortionists say that this bill is necessary to protect the rights of women, often citing instances of stillbirth and other late-term tragedies in an attempt to illustrate the medical need for late-term abortions.
There is often this argument on the left, which paints pro-lifers as “women-haters” who don’t care about the health of new mothers. It should be self-evident that removing a dead fetus from a woman’s womb is very different than killing a living preborn child before his or her birth for “health reasons.”
Writing for Daily Wire, Amanda Prestigiacomo points out “health” is not even defined by this legislation. Given that “health” is such a broad concept, virtually any reason for having an abortion can be made to fit under this umbrella.
More to the point, however, Dr. Omar L. Hamada, an OB/GYN and former army surgeon, says that there is no medical reason to ever have a third-term abortion.
“There’s absolutely no reason to kill a baby before delivery in the third trimester. Not a fetal or maternal indication – what we say in medicine. If there’s a problem, and there are problems in the third trimester, both with the babies and with the mom that require delivery, just deliver the baby. We don’t have to kill it,” Dr. Hamada told Fox News.
The bill will also remove “abortion” from New York’s penal code — a move which many people have rightly pointed out actually hurts women. Removing it from the criminal code all together will greatly restrict prosecutors looking to charge individuals who have harmed a woman’s unborn child, especially domestic abusers. How is that good for women, exactly?
